God’s divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of the one who called us by God’s own glory and goodness. Through these God has given us God’s very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, familial kindness; and to familial kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:3-8
Scripted Christianity
– Devotions in the Letters from Peter
Acting Christian is a lot like being Christian. It isn’t really doing Christian. If you’re acting Christian from a script, if what you follow is a regimen of do’s and don’ts, then you have to ask yourself, am I really doing Christian?
A lot of people would feel lost without a script for their lives. But I find I can’t live Christian if I’m not trusting the Christ of Christianity to guide the Christian life I live. Confused?
Me too. Like Peter, I tend to trust the boat but not the extended hand out over the water. God calls us to step out in faith, but we want to stay in the boat. The boat is safe. The script is safe. The water isn’t. We don’t see the hand for the water.
But would Jesus call us to do anything that wasn’t safe? Yes. When we follow Jesus, the Christ of Christianity, we’re doing Christian without a script. We’re doing outside the boat. Christianity doesn’t call us to be safe; Christ calls us to do Christianity. Life will always be wind and choppy water. Opt for Spirit led Christianity. Then do Christian.
Invitation to pray: Holy One, the water and the wind are signs of your Spirit. Either the Spirit will trouble me, or lead me. Lead me out of the boat and onto the water. Hold my hand, Jesus – In your name, Amen.
